2012-13

In July of 2012, I opened the doors to Spencer Hill Gallery. It was a jewel-box gallery that nestled at the crown of Spencer Hill in the Pinewood Acres neighborhood of Corning, New York, and offered an appealing space for artist exhibitions and colloquies. Prior to opening the gallery on the north side of our private home, it was the home studio space for acclaimed artist, Thomas Buechner (d. 2010), who was the founding director of The Corning Museum of Glass, former president of Steuben Glass, and former director of the Brooklyn Museum. Buechner built the 520 square foot studio in 1979-80, designed by architect, Joseph Connell. In 1986-87 Buechner began painting full-time and henceforth for 24 years became the beacon and mentor for many in the community and region by opening his studio and home as a sanctuary for inspiration and dwelling place for scholarly conversation and learning.

With its history and bucolic setting Spencer Hill Gallery existed as the visual epitome of the intrinsic relationship between the artist and collector. It offered a rotating schedule of art exhibitions for its 22 American artists to continue the Buechner legacy for inspiration, artist exposure, and a place for conversation and learning. The following images offer a look into a brief period of my career as the owner of a small commercial gallery.

A Sense of Place: 7/1/12 – 8/4/12, Spencer Hill Gallery’s inaugural exhibition

Tracing life’s footprints often leads to new discoveries to newfound strengths and a reorientation affirming present realities. Finding a sense of place connotes newness and identity–that locus of epiphany, that place we call home. A Sense of Place investigated discovery, meaning, and purpose within a cluster of sensibilities that rest at the place of remembering, forgetting, letting go, holding on, adventure, imagination, and beginning anew by exploring visual and actual textures.

The initial 19 artists brought together their own sense of place as artists in the world. As such, viewers caught a glimpse into the beauty and practice of these seasoned artists. Participants include: David Berry, Sandra Bowden, Scot Bennett, Emanuele Cacciatore, Ralph Gabriner, Nicora Gangi, Douglas Giebel, Bruce Herman, Nancy Jurs, Larry Merrill, Lanna Pejovic, Toni Pepe, Peter Pincus, Masha Ryskin, Jillian Sokso, Shelley Thorstensen, Jo-Ann Van Reeuwyk, Sabra Wood, and Jim Zingarelli
